Wednesday watch: Samantha Bee on Catholic hospitals

With reproductive rights under attack everywhere you turn, from Congress trying to defund Planned Parenthood to state legislatures mandating fetus funerals, there’s a stealth threat that hasn’t gotten as much attention but also poses a huge danger to women’s health. The ACLU reports that one in six hospitals beds in the US is now in a Catholic hospital that follows the church’s health directives, even when they threaten a woman’s life. Samantha Bee brings her perfect blend of humor and righteous indignation to the issue on this week’s episode of Full Frontal.

Say it again: the anti-choice movement hurts people

NEW YORK - AUGUST 30: A protester with Society for Truth and Justice holds a sign during a protest located about one block away from Madison Square Garden August 30, 2004 in New Yok City. Pro-choice activists need to be loud and proud

pro-choice

The past few weeks have been rough ones for supporters of abortion rights and women’s reproductive health care. Every week a new deceptively edited video making false claims about Planned Parenthood has been released, and anti-choice politicians eagerly snap them up to feed their grandstanding. Seeing women’s rights under attack is hardly new in an era where politicians are trying to ban abortion after 6 weeks and nearly every clinic in Texas is shutting down, but this coordinated, slimy attack has been demoralizing. In the swirl of sensationalism and political opportunism, women lose, especially low-income women with little access to health care.  Continue reading “Pro-choice activists need to be loud and proud”
